Dogster.com editor/writer Maria Goodavage will present “America’s Canine Heroes: The Story of Military Working Dogs” on Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.
During her lecture, Goodavage will look at the four-legged heroes who serve our country, what they bring to the fight, how they do it and the deep bonds they form with those who work with them.
Her longstanding passion for dogs of war started when her dad – also an author – told her about the stray pups (and a wayward monkey) he took in while overseas in World War II, and how military dogs helped save lives and sometimes soldiers’ sanity.
I read her book and enjoyed every page. Now I am in the process of building an animal shelter in my home town and dedicate it to the Vietnam War Dogs and their handlers. The statue will be a bronze statue of a VN soldier and his dog – drawings almost complete.
